International Driver's License Information and Frequently Asked Questions

The terms International Driver’s License (IDL) and International Driving Permit (IDP) both refer to a document that provides a multilingual translation of your driver’s license. This document is essential for legal driving in many foreign countries. It may also be called an International Driving License or an International Driver’s Permit

Should I obtain an International Driving Permit to drive in Spain?

In Spain, if you are a non-EU resident and plan to drive with a non-European Union driver’s license, you must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP). This permit serves as a translation of your original driver’s license and must be accompanied by the valid driver’s license issued by your home country.

Individuals from any country can apply for an International Driver’s License as long as they hold a valid driver’s license. The application process includes uploading a recent headshot (instructions on submitting your headshot for the IDP/IDL can be found here) along with a copy of your current driver’s license. No specific nationality or citizenship is required

Yes, tourists & temporary visitors can legally drive in Spain with an International Driving Permit (IDP), which translates your home country’s driver’s license. To see where else you can use an International Driver’s License, please check (Countries That Accept an International Driver’s License).

Here are the main requirements for driving in Spain:

1.Driver’s License Requirements: You should maintain a current driver’s license from your home country. Additionally, an International Driver’s License (IDL), which serves as a translation, is required. Some states might recognize a foreign driver’s license without an International Driving Permit, but having both is generally recommended.

2. Minimum Ages: The legal minimum age to drive a car in Spain is 18 years. For motorcycles, the minimum age can be 15 years depending on the engine size. The typical to rent a car in Spain is 21 years.

3. Insurance: All vehicles must be insured with at least third-party liability coverage to be legally driven on public roads.

4. Traffic Laws – Important traffic laws and regulations are listed below.

Obtaining an International Driving Permit involves a simple three-step process:

1. Complete the application online
2. Provide photos of your driver’s license and a recent headshot.
3. Download the digital version of your International Driving License.

Prices for an International Driving Permit begin at $35. The final cost depends on several factors including the permit’s duration (1 to 3 years), chosen shipping method (digital only, standard, or express), and the processing speed (standard or urgent).

1.Personal Details: Your full name, country of residence, date and birthplace, alongside a recent photograph.

2. Translation Details: Translations in 12 languages, among which are Spanish and English.

3. Authorized Vehicle Types: A detailed list of vehicle categories that you are permitted to operate.

4. Participating Countries: A list of over 175 countries where the permit is accepted.

5. Specific Terms: Any exceptions and limitations that apply.

For an example of what an International Driving Permit looks like, refer to: “What is an International Driving Permit.”

The International Driver’s License follows the following category system (A-E), specifying the types of vehicles you’re licensed to drive:

A – Motorcycles: Includes all motorbikes, from mopeds to motorcycles with sidecars.

B – Cars: Private vehicles like standard cars, SUVs, and personal-use vans, seating up to eight passengers.

C – Heavy Vehicles: For driving large commercial vehicles, such as trucks.

D – Passenger Buses: Buses and other passenger vehicles seating more than eight people.

E – Trailers: An addition to any of the categories above

After having your International Driving License application processed, you receive a digital version that can be accessed online or saved on your mobile device. While it is best to have your physical International Driving License on hand, the digital version is acceptable to show local authorities and rental agencies if needed. This is particularly useful for travelers in transit who may not have their original license readily available or are awaiting its delivery.

If you currently hold an E-ITA IDP and have lost your physical copy, our customer support is at your service for assistance. We offer complimentary replacements with the option for next-day delivery worldwide.

Should you require an International Driving License urgently, vehicle rental purposes, opt for the expedited processing service during the online IDL application to swiftly obtain your digital license.

Your IDP application can be done online in less than 5 minutes. The standard processing time is two hours. For those who need it sooner – urgent processing is available and your documents are ready within 15 minutes. Your International Driving Permit will be available as soon your application has been processed. All orders are mailed out next business day.

You do not need to have an International Driving Permit to buy a car. You do, however, need a form of government issued identification (Passport/Driver’s License). Your IDP does allow you to drive while abroad – however it is not a standard alone document.

Am I eligible to apply for an International Driving License if my license has expired?

An International Driver’s Permit works as a translation of your existing driver’s license. You may still apply with an expired license; however, it is advisable to renew your original license as soon as possible to avoid complications.

How can I convert my International Driver's License into a local license?

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) does not permit an International Driving Permit (IDP) to be exchanged into a local Spanish Driver’s License. Your IDP is a meant to a be a temporary document alongside your existing license that allows you to rent and drive vehicles for a short period.

Those planning on staying in Spain long term (more than 6 months) will need to apply for a full Spanish Driver’s License which will require both a driving and written test.
