You do not need to be a Greek citizen. The application does not have any citizenship requirements. Anyone who has a valid license from their home country is able to complete the application by submitting a recent headshot and copy of your existing license.

How to drive in Greece legally

Follow these requirements to drive in Greece

1.Driver’s License: The license from your home country needs to be current and in good standing. You will also need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP), that will translate your license into Greek. serves as a translation, is required. While some countries may allow a foreign driver’s license without an International Driving Permit, having both is generally recommended.

2. Age: The legal minimum age to drive a car in Greece is 18 years. For motorcycles, under 125cc – minimum age is 16. For those larger than 125cc – the age is 18. It is common to rent ATVs in Greece. The minimum age is 18

3. Insurance: All vehicles must be insured with at least third-party liability coverage to be legally driven on public roads.

What are the steps to get an International Driving License

To receive an International Driver’s License follow the following steps:

International Driver's Permit Categories

The International Driver’s License follows the following category system (A-E), specifying the types of vehicles you’re licensed to drive:

A – Motorcycles: Includes all motorbikes, from mopeds to motorcycles with sidecars.

B – Cars: Private vehicles like standard cars, SUVs, and personal-use vans, seating up to eight passengers.

C – Heavy Vehicles: For driving large commercial vehicles, such as trucks.

D – Passenger Buses: Buses and other passenger vehicles seating more than eight people.

E – Trailers: An addition to any of the categories above

Do I need both a digital and physical copy of the International Driving License?

After having your International Driving License application processed, you receive a digital version that can be accessed online or saved on your mobile device. While it is best to have your physical International Driving License on hand, the digital version is acceptable to show local authorities and rental agencies if needed. This is particularly useful for travelers in transit who may not have their original license readily available or are awaiting its delivery.

When buying a vehicle, do I need an International Driving Permit

In Greece – a form of government issued identification (Passport/Driver’s License) will be required to purchase a vehicle. Your IDP does allow you to drive while abroad – however it is not a standard alone document and will not be valid on it’s own

My License has expired - can I still get an International Driving License?

When applying – upload the most recent copy of your local license, even if it is expired. The International Driving Permit is a direct translation of your current home-country’s driving license. Your IDP will be valid – but it highly recommended that you renew your local license as early as possible.

Am I able to exchange my International Driving Permit for a local Greek License?

The Ministry of Transport and Communications will allow does not permit an International Driving Permit (IDP) to be exchanged into a local Greek Driver’s License. Your IDP is a meant to a be a temporary document alongside your existing license that allows you to rent and drive vehicles for a short period.

Those planning on staying in Greece long term (more than 6 months) will need to apply for a full Spanish Driver’s License which will require both a driving and written test.

Greece Traffic Laws

  • People drive on the right side of the road.
  • The minimum age to drive a car is 18 years old. The minimum age to rent a car is 21 years old.
  • Greece does have a national seat belt law. We recommend always wearing a seat belt if it is available.
  • Greece does have a national law prohibiting mobile phone use while driving. Using a hands-free device is permitted.
  • Greece does have a national law requiring the use of helmets when on motorcycle or scooter. This applies to both drivers and passengers. Child passengers under the age of 5 are not allowed.
  • Legal Blood Alcohol Content Level: 0.05%. Do not drink and drive.
  • The maximum driving speed is 50 km/h (31 miles/hour) in urban areas and 90 km/h (55 miles/hour) in rural areas.
